I finally have my very own copy of Vogue Knitting: The Ultimate Knitting Book which I have been coveting for quite awhile. I actually ordered it from Amazon
way back at the end of February and just received it today. They kept warning me of the delay and asked if I just wanted to cancel. I continued to stick it out although I had begun to despair that it would ever arrive. I even emailed the publishers to see if the hard-to-get status was in anticipation of a revised edition coming out. They advised me that there wasn't anything like that in the works. Since I was using an Amazon gift certificate, I figured I might as well just wait it out instead of seeking another copy elsewhere. I guess it was just a case of Amazon temporarily not having enough in stock. Right now they are showing that it should ship out within 24 hours.
Was it worth the wait? I think so. I can now return the library's copy to them! Out of all the hefty technical reference books in print this one's my favorite. Notice how I qualified that statement with the phrase "in print"? That's because my overall hands-down favorite is The Principles of Knitting by June Hemmons Hiatt. Unfortunately, this book is out of print and out of my reach for now. Second-hand copies of this rare and highly sought-after book command prices upwards of $200. Even though it is truly an incredible resource, I can't see spending that much on a book that originally sold for around $35. The author is rumored to be working on a complete revision of the book. Knowing my luck, this would come out about five minutes after I plunked down the big bucks for the old edition. Fortunately, there are a number of copies available through the various local libraries around here so I can pretty much keep one or the other checked out at all times.
