I tried a Picot Edging bind-off for my toe-up socks, and I'm not loving it. While I'm still convinced that this bind-off or a similar type is an excellent idea for toe-up socks, I just don't think it's right for this particular pair. They're simply too sporty to turn around and be ultra girly at the last minute.
I began knitting these socks early last summer. I experimented with numerous bind-offs on the first sock, and they all turned out either too tight or too sloppy. I finally decided that a sewn bind-off (worked on 1x1 ribbing and akin to kitchener stitch) was the least objectionable. I figured that I could try to come up with a better solution while working the second sock. When I saw the ruffly bind-off which nona used on her I-cord gloves, I was positive I'd found my answer. I eagerly pulled out this long abandoned projected, retrieved the needles which had been stolen for glove-making, and started working on the half-completed second sock. Unfortunately, it seems that all I really accomplished during last night's knitting session was listening to a few more chapters of Anna Karenina, as I'll be ripping these back. Actually, I did learn a new bind-off, and I did confirm my theory that it would work well for toe-up socks. I just don't happen to like it for these socks.
They are cute socks. I like the ruffly cuff, sorry to hear they will get
ripped.
Cute socks! I'll have to keep an eye on this cuz I'm looking for a good
bind off for toe ups, too. Have you tried Elizabeth Zimmerman's sewn cast
off? There's a description at this url:

Without Tears (EZ) and it has great diagrams.
