In the Knitting Bag and on the Nightstand

posted 5 October 2005, Wednesday

I picked up Folk Socks: The History & Techniques of Handknitted Footwear by Nancy Bush from the library today. It starts off with an extensive history of knit socks and finishes with some wonderful patterns adapted from historical sources, but two chapters in the middle are what really make me want to add it to my personal library. The first covers essential techniques and considerations of sock knitting, and the second is a basic sock pattern with several variations for heels and toes.

My current fictional read is Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere. I've been wanting to read this and my boyfriend has been encouraging me to do so for a while now. I was first introduced to Gaiman's writing during a college course on mythology for which The Sandman Vol. 4: Season of Mists was required reading. In that graphic novel, gods from many traditions -- Christian, Greek, Norse, Egyptian, etc. -- are brought together with immortal beings of Gaiman's own creation. I look forward to finally experiencing his unique style in a full-length novel.
