In anticipation of the next book coming out in November, I'm re-reading the last of the currently published books in George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, A Storm of Swords. I may have mentioned how much I like this series at least once or twice. A special limited edition of this book is also coming out later this year from Subterranean Press. Limited editions of the first two books were put out by another small publisher called Meisha Merlin. For whatever reason, they have turned the project of publishing the rest of these special editions over to Subterranean. This series from two different publishers will probably end up looking more coordinated than the original hardbacks put out by Bantam. It seems that midway through the series Bantam has decided to go with a much plainer design for the remainder of the books rather than the nicely illustrated style on the first three. Apparently, they felt that the simpler design would attract readers who don't normally read fantasy. On the other hand, I'm sure they won't mind those who already bought the old versions buying the new versions of the first three in order to have a matching set of books. I'm not going to fall for this ploy though. ;) The Bantam books are just my knock-about, read-'em-'til-they're-falling-apart copies anyway. The special editions will be my looking-pretty-on-the-shelf books.
