Today we get up close and personal with my increases. Did you know that the make one increase comes in right and left flavors? The M1L is slightly easier -- insert your left needle under the strand between stitches from the front to the back and then knit it through the back loop. This causes the stitch to twist so that the left leg of the loop is in front. The M1R is done by inserting your left needle under the strand between stitch from the back to the front and knitting it through the front loop. This twists the stitch in the opposite direction so that the right leg crosses in front. Either way, I find they leave a teeny, tiny hole. Even so it's a pretty subtle increase.
The make one increase can also been done purl-wise. If the purl-side is the right-side, then it doesn't matter which way the stitch is twisted because the actual twist won't be seen. In this case, go with the easier to execute version -- lift the strand with the left needle from back to front and purl it through the front loop. From the knit-side, this looks like a M1R. If the knit-side will be showing and you need the stitch to twist the other way, then lift the strand from the front to the back and purl it through the back loop. This will look like a M1L on the knit-side.
